Rare Disease Cow Anatomy Model

Item ID: 2717 | Category: Anatomical

This is an unusual and rare Anatomical Model of a Cows Snout showing the symptoms of the deadly Foot and Mouth Disease. FMD is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of livestock with significant economic impact. This life-size vintage plaster model shows the lesions and sores around the gums. Mounted on a wooden base measuring 28.5 x 20cms, it stands 21cms high.

The UK has suffered 2 major epidemics of FMD, in 1967 and again in 2001 with a further smaller breakout in 2007. In 1967 442,000 animals were slaughtered and the outbreak had an estimated cost of £370 million. In 2001 around ten million sheep and cattle were killed in an eventually successful attempt to halt the disease. The county of Cumbria was the most seriously affected area of the country, with 843 cases. By the time the disease was halted the crisis was estimated to have cost Britain £8 billion ($13 billion).
